Description:

Job Summary
Serves as an ambassador of the Town by providing information to the public in a friendly and welcoming fashion. Performs a wide variety of patrol and maintenance duties in ensuring compliance of parking rules and regulations including both meters and permit parking systems.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the APD Operations Captain or his/her designee, who evaluates performance. Parking Ambassadors are guided by the Amherst Police Department Rules/Regulations, Policies and Procedures. Performs duties independently exercising considerable judgment and discretion based on the sensitive nature of work performed. Alerts supervisor of any problems requiring his/her attention

Supervision Exercised
The employee is responsible for his/her own work but will be expected to communicate directives and to provide occasional assistance to lower level and part-time employees.

Major Duties
1. Provides helpful guidance in response to questions from residents and visitors of Downtown.
2. Supplies exceptional customer service during all interactions
3. Assists public in use of all parking systems
4. Monitors for compliance with parking permits, meters and related traffic regulations. Issues citations for violation of regulations.
5. Installs vehicle immobilization devices and/or arranges for towing of vehicles in relations to numerous offenses.
6. Performs routine inspection, minor repairs and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment (all parking equipment systems) and refers defects or needed repairs to vendor or DPW.
7. Communicates proactively and appropriately as part of cross functional team in parking enforcement and meter maintenance.
8. Provides supplemental support to Police during special events.
9. Performs collection duties to ensure meter revenue is collected and deposited.
10. Develops parking enforcement schedule in collaboration with supervisor.
11. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
12. Receives and answers inquiries and requests for information from the general public and other departments.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, with a demonstrated history of increasingly responsible related experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience. Demonstrable mechanical aptitude with preference for experience with cellular and computerized networks as well. Demonstrated excellent customer services abilities.

Working knowledge of parking system; working knowledge of traffic rules and regulations. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to handle stressful situations. Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.

Tools and Equipment Used
Power and hand tools for facility maintenance; parking collection equipment; computer email and word processing; microcomputer for ticket issuance; copy and fax machines; telephone; mobile or portable radio, vehicle immobilization devices and an automobile.
