The Town of Amherst is seeking Summer Camp Counselors.  If you are an outgoing, enthusiastic team player and enjoy working with children, Amherst Recreation is hiring Summer Day Camp Counselors to work cooperatively and productively with a Team of Counselors to create an exciting, positive, and safe educational camp experience to help steer the “Fun in the Sun” Day Camp. 

JOB SUMMARY:

Counselors are members of a team of professionals responsible for providing safe and high-quality summer recreational day camp experiences for the children in their group, and for the camp as a whole. The counselor works cooperatively and productively with all other staff to create a positive atmosphere and to create interesting and exciting educational and recreational activities for campers. As an individual the counselor oversees a specific small group for whom the counselors plan and implement a wide range of recreational activities.

Camp Dates: Training will be held on June 25th and June 26th.  Camp will run June 29th – August 14th. Counselors must be available to work the entire 7 weeks of summer day camps (5 days a week) and attend a pre-camp training session the day before the first day of camp. Counselors are expected to work part of the evening on July 3nd.  (19 hours/week through May 2026; 37.5 hours/week between June 2026 and August 2026

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 18 years of age or older

Demonstrated experience working with children in small groups

Ability to plan activities for and supervise groups of children.

Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including patience, an outgoing and enthusiastic personality, and a willingness to serve.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certifications in First Aid and CPR
  • Some experience in recreational planning and supervision.

JOB ENVIRONMENT:

Work is generally performed in outside and indoor conditions; outdoor conditions require regular exposure to weather conditions; noise levels are moderate to loud.  Operates computers, telephones, copiers, and other standard office equipment.  Uses a variety of materials for instructing arts, crafts, music, nature, sports, games or other fields of instruction.  Makes regular contacts with fellow counselors, campers, and the Camp directors where contacts involve an information exchange, providing direction, listening, clarifying, redirecting, and instruction.  Has access to program-oriented confidential information.  Performs related work as required.

Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview, background and reference check; job related tests may be required.
