Water Treatment Operators Department of Public Works - Water Division FLSA – Non-Exempt DPW Association - Levels: PW 6, PW 8 & PW 9 The Town of Amherst is seeking a qualified candidate to join our Water Division as a Water Treatment Operator I, II, or III. These positions play a critical role in protecting public health by operating, monitoring, maintaining, and repairing the Town's water treatment facilities and wells. Operators also assist with water distribution activities as needed and may serve as lead operators depending on staffing requirements. Regular work schedules include one weekend day (Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday) based on operational needs. Occasional overtime, emergency call-back, weekend, and after-hours work may be required. These positions are designated as essential personnel. The Town is willing to train the right candidate. Candidates who do not have the required water treatment license at the time of hire may be hired as an Operator-in-Training and compensated accordingly until the required license is obtained. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining required license within the first year of employment. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent required, along with: - Two (2) years of college or technical training in biology, environmental science, chemistry, water treatment, or a closely related field; and
- One (1) to two (2) years of experience in related field; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the duties of the position.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Water Treatment Operator I ($26.43 - $34.47 per hour) - Commonwealth of Massachusetts Drinking Water Certification Grade 2 Treatment License
Water Treatment Operator II ($28.43 - $37.10 per hour) - Commonwealth of Massachusetts Drinking Water Certification Grade 3 Treatment License
Wastewater Treatment Operator III ($29.43 - $38.40 per hour) - Commonwealth of Massachusetts Drinking Water Certification Grade 4 Treatment License
ALL POSITIONS REQUIRE: - Valid Massachusetts Driver's License
- Knowledge of equipment, facilities, Computer SCADA system, materials, methods and procedures used in water treatment plant maintenance and operation activities
- Working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices
- Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment
- Thorough knowledge of the water SCADA alarm and monitoring system; Must be able to function independently in a water emergency and know the appropriate contacts to make
- Awareness of the dangers associated with confined spaces and other occupational hazards related to working around water facilities; Understanding of lock-out tag-out procedures and the necessary precautions to be taken when working around high voltage electric current.
- Ability to use math in performing calculations
- Ability to access and use water department records, and the computer-based GIS system
- Ability to work according to established safety protocol
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public
- Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions
- Ability to work a regular schedule that includes a weekend day (Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday)
Additionally, Water Treatment Operators II & III: - Ability to be available for after hour emergency duties and ability to participate in the On-Call Program and to work overtime hours; Ability to act as Essential Personnel
