Summer Camp Assistant Director
Recreation Department

The Town of Amherst is looking for two high-energy leaders to help steer the “Fun in the Sun” Day Camp.  As an Assistant Director, you will be the bridge between big-picture and the day-to-day action, keeping the counselor motivated and the campers engaged.

JOB SUMMARY:
This position supports the professional and administrative work related to the coordination, implementation, and supervision of the Recreation Department’s “Fun in the Sun Summer Day Camp.” The position is hands-on and requires occasional weekend and evening availability. (19 hours/week through May 2026; 37.5 hours/week between June 2026 and August 2026

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 21 years of age or older.  Two (2) years’ experience working in a school, after-school, or camp setting; AND a degree in, or in the process of completing a degree program in, Education, Childhood Development, Psychology/Social Work or other developmental discipline with a focus on elementary-aged children; OR equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and strong leadership abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of child development and management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other camp or recreation employees and supervisors
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to plan and supervise work of staff and volunteers
  • Basic computer skills or willingness to learn
  • Willingness and ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours
  • Must successfully pass Criminal Offender Registry Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background checks.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of college experience
  • Strong personal experience in interactive extracurricular activities (g., arts, sports, clubs)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must provide three (3) professional references.
