Description:
Barre Center for Buddhist Studies is a pre-eminent center for the study and practice of Buddhism in the West. Our 30-bed retreat center is located on 90 acres of wooded land in central Massachusetts. Our busy kitchen needs another full-time Cook to prepare and serve delicious and nutritious vegetarian meals for the students, teachers, and staff of BCBS. Some evenings and weekends are required.

Responsibilities include:
• Plan and prepare a variety of tasty and nutritious vegetarian meals for 25-45 people
• Prepare and serve a daily meal to our resident monk
• Make granola, breads, and desserts as time permits
• Maintain a clean, orderly and efficient kitchen work space
• Train and support retreatants in kitchen tasks
• Put away and rotate food deliveries
• Other duties and tasks as necessary
• Treat everyone with kindness and respect in every interaction
Requirements:
• One or more years of professional cooking experience featuring organic whole food ingredients, in a high-volume kitchen, preferably in a contemplative work setting
• Good organizational skills with demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize and manage multiple tasks with flexibility and good humor
• Flexibility in schedule, and ability to work some evenings and most weekends
• Ability to remain calm under kitchen pressure, and to work compassionately with retreatants
• Strong interpersonal communication skills; ability to take direction; ability to function as both team leader and team player
• An interest in meditation practice and being of service
• Position involves standing for long periods and occasionally requires physical labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects
