Description:
The Old Creamery Co-op is looking for an experienced grocery manager to lead our team. Our small but busy store carries an eclectic selection of items to meet the needs of the community and traveling public. Our goal is to procure the best and freshest products available and to support local manufactures, growers and artisans. Our focus is on organic, sustainability and GMO-free products.

GROCERY LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION

Status: Reports to General Manger
Leadership position 35-40 hours

Directs: Cashier/Floaters in stocking items.

Budgeting and Planning
Work with General Manager to develop annual operating budget, sales projections, capital budget, and equipment needs. Review department financial reports and take corrective action in Grocery Departments as needed.
Duties
The Grocery Leader is responsible for the purchasing for frozen, refrigerated, breads, health and beauty, vitamins and supplements, beer, wine, and packaged grocery, and buys products locally produced whenever it is sound to do so, with consideration to quality and price and customer needs.
The Grocery Leader works with the GM in making pricing decisions and is responsible for merchandising displays, case stacks, signage, and sales. The Grocery Leader also directs other staff towards a variety of store tasks on an as needed basis, such as stocking, re-arranging product, etc…, and works closely with customers and staff on the floor, as questions arise, to either answer those questions or to direct them to the appropriate staff person.

The Grocery Leader takes care of credits and returns, processes all related paperwork in a timely and accurate manner, and ensures prices are being updated in the database correctly and on time.

The Grocery Leader is responsible for accurate pricing, both in the POS system (Co-Pos) and in all signage in the Grocery Department.

The Grocery Leader attends the Team Leader meetings as scheduled.

The Grocery Leader seeks to purchase items that are on sale, negotiating with individual vendors, Brokers, and Distributors. He or she should keep in mind that our retail prices need to be competitive with other stores in the area, and the need for affordability for our customers, while maintaining prices at a level that can sustain the operations of the Co-op. The Grocery Leader shall conduct periodic price comparisons, comparing our prices with the prices of the same products on our competitor’s shelves.

The Grocery Leader is also responsible for Category Management in the Grocery Department, and frequently checks UNFI reports and other information made available from other co-ops to ensure we have the best possible mix of product for our customers. When our co-op joins NCGA, the GL will also work closely with NCGA as required by the GM, when appropriate programs are offered, and checks NCGA website often to ensure continued knowledge of the industry.

Measurable Goals:
Sales should equal or exceed the budgeted sales for the department.
Accuracy on product price scanning tests should be below a 2% error rate.
Out of stocks should be no higher than 7% in general and 6% for staples.
Gross Margin Dollars should equal or exceed the budget.

Qualifications:
Detail-oriented, energetic, efficient, with excellent organizational and communication skills.

Supervisory experience and demonstrated skills and ability.

Must be very friendly and out-going as the Grocery Leader interacts with customers and staff throughout the day. Experience serving the public with demonstrated customer service skills and abilities is essential

Previous retail experience in Grocery, knowledge of the natural foods industry and natural and organic products is a must.

Must have excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, e-mail and database familiarity.

As an essential function of this position, the employee must be congenial with other employees and customers at all times, with ability to communicate directly, objectively, and respectfully.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work with minimal supervision.

Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply, compare costs and
calculate differences in amounts and in percentages.
