Orion magazine, a nonprofit magazine about nature and culture, seeks an Individual Giving Coordinator to join our small, hard-working team. This person will play the lead role in Orion’s annual fund and will support Orion’s other fundraising activities (major gifts, grant-seeking, etc.), which together comprise 65% of Orion’s annual budget.

The individual giving coordinator must have a strong background and proven track record in nonprofit fundraising, as well as a fluency in and general knowledge of the subjects that are important to Orion’s donors, ranging from traditional environmental conservation to environmental justice to the literary and visual arts. The individual giving coordinator must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, with the efficacy and efficiency that are necessary in a small organization and a close-knit workplace.

The individual giving coordinator will build on and maintain a solid, established fundraising rubric, while also bringing new ideas and entrepreneurialism to the table. An experienced and engaged fundraiser will have ample opportunity to experiment, explore new revenue lines, and set new organizational and personal fundraising goals.

General Statement of Duties:
The individual giving coordinator has primary responsibility for Orion’s annual fund, which includes coordinated direct mail/online campaigns, seasonal appeals and promotions, subscription-related fundraising, and monthly giving. They work closely with the database staff to ensure sterling customer service and donor stewardship. Though the focus of this position is on grassroots-level annual giving, the individual giving coordinator can assume responsibility for some current individual mid-level and major donor relationships, as well as cultivate new relationships.

The individual giving coordinator manages the annual fundraising calendar and supports the moves management activities of the executive director, strategic director, board chair, and other staff and volunteers who have fundraising responsibilities. They also oversee cultivation of potential donors identified within Orion’s subscription list, at events, and through personal recommendations. The individual giving coordinator provides periodic support for special projects and related grant-seeking activities. They seek out and implement opportunities for coordinated fundraising/subscription campaigns, and play the primary role in organizing fundraising or friendraising events.

The individual giving coordinator also plays a critical role in Orion’s circulation program by collaborating with the strategic director and database staff on subscription promotions throughout the year. These promotions are cooperative projects, but the individual giving coordinator is responsible for the implementation of certain elements of each effort, such as direct mail.

Responsibilities:
1. Develop, schedule, and implement four annual fund appeals each year, coordinating direct mail, online, email, and social media components. Work collaboratively with other staff members to develop the appeal concepts and collateral, and then liaise with designers, mail houses, and other vendors to implement these campaigns. In cooperation with database staff, perform regular analysis and reporting to gauge the health of the annual fund and report on it to colleagues, board members, and other stakeholders.
2. Coordinate Orion’s donor stewardship; in collaboration with the strategic director, develop and oversee regular non-ask communications.
3. Develop and implement strategies for increasing the number of Orion’s annual donors, monthly donors, and planned gifts, and enhance the stewardship programs for those segments.
4. In collaboration with the strategic director and database staff, co-create the annual and multi-year individual giving calendars; create, implement, and oversee the timelines for all activities included therein.
5. Provide regular and substantial support for moves management performed by Orion’s executive staff.
6. Schedule and chair regular development meetings; steward an organization-wide professional atmosphere that is ideologically supportive of fundraising.
7. Maintain thorough records of contacts with individual donors in the database.
8. Perform and provide analyses of fundraising performance, risks, and opportunities to Orion’s executive staff.
9. Coordinate fundraising and friendraising events.
10. Support fundraising activities undertaken by the Orion Board of Directors.
11. Work closely with other staff on circulation efforts, and coordinate the direct mail components of those efforts.
12. Travel to Orion’s Great Barrington office up to twice a month.

Compensation:
Commensurate with experience, plus a very generous health/dental/life and PTO benefits package. Orion is on a 36-hour work week, M-Th 9am-5pm, F 9am-1pm.

Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires experience and success in nonprofit fundraising, and a wide-ranging knowledge of and familiarity with fundraising strategies and resources. Proficiency in all MS Office products for Mac is required; facility with InDesign is advantageous. They will need proficiency in Salesforce, Slack, Google Docs, Dropbox, and Basecamp. Experience working in a CRM or development database is required. This position requires sterling interpersonal skills, both inside and outside the office, as well as exemplary written and verbal communication skills. Candidates should have a grasp of and interest in the larger environmental and cultural issues that Orion seeks to address. As a key member of Orion’s small staff, the individual giving coordinator is expected to actively help steward an institutional culture that is grounded in collaboration, openness, enthusiasm for others’ ideas, and generosity of spirit. The individual giving coordinator should personify exemplary managerial competencies such as self-observation, self-management, interpersonal awareness, attention to communication, personal credibility, empowerment of others, facilitating collaboration, and providing motivational support. Occasional travel will be required.
