Description:
Deerfield Academy’s Finance Office is seeking to fill the position of Assistant Controller. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller coordinates the internal control, accounting and tax activities of the Academy to help provide accurate and useful financial and related data for Academy users; to safeguard the Academy’s assets; and to ensure thoughtful, adequate institutional compliance. The Assistant Controller is responsible for timely and accurate reporting of financial data in accordance with policies, laws, regulations and generally accepted accounting principles.

Responsibilities will include overseeing the analysis and resolution of complex accounting and GAAP reporting issues, managing the annual financial statement and 403(b) audit processes, managing and documenting accounting controls, ensuring compliance with auditing standards and regulatory requirements, overseeing annual tax and informational filings, ensuring cash management processes are in place and general ledger balances are accurate, and coordination to ensure timely and accurate reporting of depreciable fixed assets, gift, and endowment data. This position is also responsible for supervising the accounts payable, expense reporting, and general accounting functions and staff.

The successful candidate will have an accounting or finance related degree (Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred); at least 5 years’ experience, preferably in not-for-profit industry (public accounting experience is highly desired); demonstrated proficiency and familiarity with database accounting and spreadsheet software; high degree of professional character and ethical standards in the performance of duties; excellent written and oral communication; detailed research and comprehension skills; and the ability to be a team player and collaborate with others successfully. Supervisory experience required.
